resmed airfit n10 mask and headgear

Getting diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea weighs heavily on our patients.  There is a swath of information available and treatment options can vary from patient to patient.

There has been a major growth in understanding of just how much obstructive sleep apnea impacts the overall health and well-being of a person. Along with that growth has come a wide variety of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, masks, and accessories.

The wonderful staff here at Sleep Resolutions knows how overwhelming it can be to get quality information and direction. One thing we really strive to do for all our patients is to find the information and deliver it. After all, we believe our patients are like family, and we want you to be able to make the decisions that work best for you and your sleep therapy.

Having a clear understanding of the different types of machines, mask, and accessories available will help you find the right fit for you.  Being comfortable in your sleep mask plays a significant role in your compliance with your sleep therapy.

Here is our complete review of ResMed’s AirFit N10 Nasal mask.

Pros of the AirFit N10

resmed airfit n10 mask without headgear

The AirFit N10 features a unique under-thee-ye frame that allows patients the visual freedom to wear glasses, watch tv, or read a book before bed.  Along with the frame there are removable strap cushions that rest against your face comfortable while ensuring a quality seal. The removable support cushions ease the washing process.

Another great feature is that all of the stitching is on the inside of the frame, reducing the likelihood of the mask/headgear from snagging throughout the night.

ResMed highlights the minimalistic design of this mask and the key-clips.  The key-clips are magnetic and create a solid clasp with little effort.

The magnetic key-clips also allow for easy removal and reattachment. This is a great feature for those that use the bathroom during the night.

The lightweight design and flexible tubing allow for all sleeping positions without compromising the seal.

The AirFit N10 nasal mask has passive venting to reduce rebreathing.

AirFit N10 Troubleshooting

Just as all our patients are different, so are all CPAP masks.  Although each mask has its strengths, there are common problems that occur while you adjust to your mask. The majority of the time the issues that arise can be fixed with a little direction.

The Mask is Noisy

The most common reasons that the AirFit N10 nasal mask could be noisy are blockages in the venting, incorrectly assembled mask, or air leaks.

First, check the venting.  Always use a soft bristle brush to clean the vent.

Should that not correct the noisy mask, try to disassemble the mask and reassemble it following the instructions provided with your mask.

Another solution is to refit or reposition the mask.  Readjust the headgear straps to ensure the mask is close enough to form a quality seal.

Mask Leaking Around Face

There are a number of reasons that could cause the mask to leak around your face.  The mask may need to be repositioned.  The AirFit N10 has the ResMed logo on it.  Make sure that logo is facing downward on the bottom of the cushion.

Another solution is to pull the mask away from your face to reposition.  While repositioning the mask, check to make sure the lower corners of the mask are completely covering your nose.  Re-adjust your headgear to bring the mask closer to your face to ensure a quality seal.

Follow the instructions provided and refit your mask.  Check the cushion to ensure that it is also in the correct position.  The cushion membrane may be folded. Use a pinching motion to ease the cushion back into the correct form.

You may simply have the wrong size of mask.  You will need to speak with your sleep medicine provider.  ResMed has as sizing template for the AirFit N10 that should be use to ensure accurate sizing.

Incorrect Fit

The mask may be incorrectly assembled. Disassemble the mask and reassemble following the instructions provided. The cushion might be dirty.  Clean the cushion to see if that resolves the issue.

If those two options do not resolved the incorrect fit, then seek out assistance from your sleep medicine provider.  The mask may be the wrong size. Always make sure that your sleep medicine provider is using the ResMed’s fitting template to ensure accurate sizing.

Customer Reviews

Knowing the features of the mask is only half the information.  FInding how this mask works for other patients can provide you some insight into this mask.  We always ask our patients for honest feedback given their experiences with any CPAP machine, mask, or accessory.

Here is some of valued feedback.

“I have been using my CPAP for about 15 years and this is by far the best mask as there are no straps across my forehead. Very comfortable. Minimal air leakage.”

“So, as a kid I got teased for having a Big Nose. That's possibly why I'm not giving this 5 starts. It doesn't seem to be deep enough, from my perspective. That's the only downside I've found to using this mask (and I've worn all kinds over the many years I've been using CPAP). It has minimal interference, and is easy to take off and re-attach. Simple, easy to use. I just don't like my nose being that close to the hose side of the mask.”
